Maalstroom, who are ‘one of the best folkbands in the Netherlands’ (Assie Aukes on Folkforum), are guys ‘who do the right things the right way’ (FROOTS CD Review ‘Open Window’) They are forging a new project with Jo Freya, “A folk singer with Sax Appeal” (DorE 09) reknowned for being , ‘ a lovely lass and a great musician’ (Eddi Reader).
Whilst building a solid live-reputation, performing in the Netherlands, the UK, Belgium and Germany, this band is also reknowned for collaborating with artists from other countries. This began with Flook’s Brian Finnegan, went on to a later collaboration with Wim Poesen from Belgium and now Jo.
The result Jo Freya meets Maalstroom: Five exquisite composers, one tight band sparkling with enjoyment. Inventive harmony vocals, reed-instrument duets and sophisticated arrangements are combined with a warm and humorous stage-presence.
Vocalist and saxophonist Jo Freya needs little introduction: she is a mainstay of the British folkscene. Although she’s been in the trade for twenty years, this extraordinary performer keeps reinventing herself.
The three different cd’s she made over the past three years give a good idea of the scope of her work: Octomento with the legendary folk-bigband Blowzabella, LAL (Jo Freya’s Lal Waterson project) and her first solo-album Female Smuggler. All three have been received with great critical acclaim.e.g. “LAL is one of the best English folk related albums I’ve heard in some time. To repeat: wonderful singing, clever and appropriate arrangements, and great songs. You can’t ask for more than that. – KR.
